Box Culvert
Design SpecificationsEC Box Culvert is designed according to the following design criterias:
- Design Loading requirements
a) MS 1293 : Part 1 : 1992 b) BD 31/87 - Buried Concrete Box type structures
- Reinforced Concrete design requirements
a) BS 8110 : Part 1 : 1985 b) BS 5400 : Part 4 : 1984
- Concrete grade : 40 N/mm2
|
- Minimum reinforcement cover = 25mm~35mm
- Coefficient of earth pressure at rest = 0.5
- Bulk density of soil = 19 KN/m3
- EC Box Culvert comply to proof load of 112.5 KN over an area of 320mm x 320mm placed at any position on the Culvert Lid
- EC Box Culverts are designed to cater for surcharge load of between 0.6m to 2.0m of fill weight and 45 units of HB loading
|
Installation of the Box Culvert
- The U-Drain/ Box Culvert should be laid on compacted sand bedding to the required level.
- Area where soil condition is bad, excavate deeper and replace with suitable material beneath the sand bedding, according to the engineer's design requirements for the foundation.
- Gap at joining area should be filled with cement mortar.
- Back of weepholes should be filled with suitable filter material.

Handling of the Box Culvert
- Weepholes are to be utilized as lifting holes for handling and installing the
U-Drain/ Box Culvert.
- A Lifting Beam is to be used for lifting the U-Drain/ Box Culvert to prevent excessive stress to the legs. (see Figure 2)
- All U-Drains/ Box Culverts are to be placed or stacked on level and firm ground at all times on site.
